Kochi (Cochin)

Top Pick

The port city of Kochi is located on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsulas. The older parts of the city are an unlikely blend of medieval Portugal, Holland and an English country village grafted onto the tropical Malabar Coast. Most of the historical sights are in Fort Cochin or Mattancherry. Down near the waterfront you can see St Francis Church, India's oldest; a 450-year-old Portuguese palace; Chinese fishing nets strung out past Fort Cochin; and a synagogue dating back to the mid 16th century. Ferries scuttle back and forth around Kochi and dolphins can often be seen in the harbour.

Khana National Park

Top Pick

An inspiration for Rudyard Kipling, Khana offers excellent opportunities for spotting tigers in the wild. Jeep safaris are the way to look for tigers and there are good accommodation options in and around the park.

Kaziranga National Park

Top Pick

A World Heritage Site on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra, Kaziranga's varied habitats are home to myriad birds as well as elephants, wild buffalo, tigers and the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.

Kalimpong

Top Pick

A former hill station in West Bengal, Kalimpong is now celebrated for its colourful orchid nurseries, artisan workshops and superb views of Mount Kangchenjunga.

Jodphur

Top Pick

The mighty Mehrangarh Fort stands sentinel over the winding city streets of the old town where the blue-washed houses give Jodhpur its moniker of 'The Blue City'.

Jaisalmer

Top Pick

Located in the remote western corner of Rajasthan, the small desert town of Jaisamler is dominated by the golden sandstone walls of its massive fort that dates back to the 12th century.

Indus Valley

Top Pick

The ancient monasteries and ruined palaces of Stok, Shey, Thiksey and Hemis are the key sights of the Indus Valley where you can also attend a Buddhist festival.

Hyderabad

Top Pick

Known as the 'Pearl City', Hyderabad's main attractions are the spectacular Galconda Fort, the Qutub Shahi Tombs and the triumphant Charminar archway. A visit to its night time bazaar is also highly recommended.

Hampi

Top Pick

The incredible UNESCO listed ruined city of Hampi (or Vijanyanagar) is a vast complex of palaces, baths, forts and temples. The stone chariot and Royal enclosure are remarkably intact and among its premier sights.
